Canadian sisters don’t worry that Roller Derby Rules are different for you. As far as the rules go most teams do abide by the WFTDA Regulations. That seems to pretty much be the tried and true regulations, although there can be slight variations that some refs are more picky about then others. Overall though, the flat track rules are the most popular and most well known standard for Roller Derby sports.

Without a doubt there are many more teams in America, but it seems to me that the Canadian teams could be coming in pretty strong. If you are wondering if there is a Roller Derby League in your part of Canada never fear, there are Roller Derby Leagues in Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan. In the Ontario area alone there are about 14 Teams that have been around for various lengths of time. If you think you would like to start your own team that could be okay too. Although I think unless you’re a very seasoned veteran you would do better to become affiliated with a Roller Derby league or existing Roller Derby team. You can learn a lot from Roller Derby Team members that have been around for awhile.

Almost all the teams like to do some sort of fundraising or charitable work, so even if you do not skate but feel like you might like to be a part of this great sport somehow, Roller Derby Diva’s everywhere will be happy for the helping hands when it comes to charitable cause, helping the team logistically or just being a sponsor. One day when I was clicking around the internet I came a crossed a sight that had a great idea. This website was trying to build an International Roller Derby Roster. The idea was an expansion from the original one that was made by Paige Burner some time ago. The more I thought about it I could see the genius in the idea. It was a concept that reminded me of a world wide Roller Derby Phonebook. How convenient it would be to find any place you go. From a Roller Derby Team standpoint this would be a great way to find potential new members, or even Roller Derby Teams to skate against. Roller Derby Leagues could use this information to form Roller Derby Tournaments all over the world. Now that would definitely be something to see. I think it is definitely something we might see in the future. The Roller derby isn’t just on TV anymore.

The Roller Derby Roster is actually just a listing of Roller Derby Nicknames, the skaters number, and team. There is no other identifying information available to the viewer. I found some of the Roller Derby Nicknames pure genius, in fact I was jealous I didn’t think of some of them. As of August 2010 there are close to 21000 names of skaters posted. Next time someone asks you how popular Roller Derby is, point them in the direction of the roster and let them find out for themselves. Are all Roller skates Roller Derby skates? Well there are some that look like they are Roller Derby Skates, but in the opinion of Derby Diva’s not all skates are created equal. Although your aunt’s skates out in the garage may seem like a good pair to use, I have to tell you don’t do that. It might be fine for someone that just wants to skate around for a few hours once in awhile, however it really is not the best thing if you want to do any serious Roller Derby Training. Roller Derby Skating is serious physical work. You have to make sure the Roller Derby Skates you choose are in good condition and free from any defects.

What you should look for is a higher end skate. Roller Derby Skates vary in price, some of the better skates can cost a few hundred dollars. Take your time to look around and you should be able to find a good deal on a good grade skate. There are advantages of using new skates, make sure you have regular maintenance to keep them in peak performing condition. If you skate a lot every six months should be the minimum between a serious tuneup. The bearings will last longer and be smooth and the wheels will not be pitted. Choose a skate that does not pinch or rub, you should feel comfortable with your foot stable. What color or design you choose is all up to you. Remember Roller Derby Skates are actually sports equipment. Don’t penny pinch, your skates can be what helps you make points!

A lot of you probably were not born in the days of Quad skates. There was a time when someone said they were going roller skating that was the type of skate everyone would wear. Seems like inline skates have been around for ever doesn’t it? Quad skated mean there are four wheels and they are not in a row like inline skates. Well it does not take a Roller Derby Diva to tell you that you can do it just as good on four wheels as inline skating. In fact and I maybe prejudiced, I think you can actually do it better. If you are planning to compete the WFTDA rules state that players are to wear quad skates. Refs can wear either style but I don’t understand who would prefer inline.

Quad skates are out there to buy, they can cost on the cheaper end as little as $59US or for better skates up to a few hundred dollars. You want to make sure you make a wise investment if you are planning to compete, make sure you get a pair that will stand up to the wear and tear you will put on the skates, but still look real nice with your skirts. Take care of your skates by getting the bearings changed, this will extend your wheel life and help you experience a smoother ride. Other tips are to keep your laces as new and intact as possible and clean the boot I know the blood spots are cool but eventually they will draw flies.

You might think that a Roller Derby pin up is the last thing that anyone would want or have. I think your wrong. Sure there are some of the more racy pictures of girls dressed, or not, without to much more on then just their skates. That is not the type of Roller Derby Pin Up that the Derby Diva’s are into. Roller Derby Team Pin ups are pretty important if you want to be viewed as professional. This is how you get your Roller Derby Team name out there, or if your lucky to get your name an face in a Roller Derby Magazine. Great action shots are always keepers, but if you feel so inclined you can take the traditional team type picture. There is no one saying that you have to have a traditional pose though. I kind of like to see the over the top look some of the teams come up with. It just adds to their character and mystic.

I myself have a cute picture with just me, no blood, no snarling face, just me my skates and pig tails. Well I do have on a real cute skirt and top. I think it looks pretty punk. Some folks carry cute pictures of their kids or pets. The Derby Diva’s like to share Roller Derby Pictures. I have a whole bunch of my favorite gals and a few of moments that were just to incredible not to take a picture. Roller Derby Magazines carry great action shots of some of the best competitors both amateur and professional so those are always fun to look at. It might seem like a strange thing to have pictures of, but really it is no different then when you take pictures with a bunch of your friends when you go out. The only real difference is Roller Derby Diva’s are much cooler.

I like many of the older Roller Derby Pictures of the early days. I might be a tough cookie in the rink but I do have a soft side for Roller Derby Nostalgia. I try to imagine what it must have been like for Roller Derby Queens back in the 1940’s. Although no one thinks twice about my brash style today, back in the day it was probably different. For entertainment value many of the pictures or autographs from the early days or even the 1980’s are sought after Roller Derby Collectibles. Who knows some of the pictures you take today can become some of the history for tomorrows skaters. To really appreciate how complex Roller Derby Competition is, you have to understand a bit more than just how to score. One major part you do have to understand is what causes a penalty. Derby Diva’s are all for a night of good clean action. Keep in mind the Roller Derby Trash Talk is just that, it is part of the culture and a big part of what the fans want. We really don’t feel like that in the real world. More importantly, we really are not trying to start a brawl. So here are a few things you should not do or you will end up with a penalty.

First you cannot do certain types of blocking, for instance you cannot hit an opponent in the back, back of the legs or on their butts. You also cannot swing your elbows into other team members. And you can never grab, hold or push another player. Depending on the result of the action their could be a minor or major penalty called. It is common sense you all have to skate in the same direction and you can’t be out to trip someone intentionally. Not so apparent penalties happen when there are blocks while out of bounds. One thing I love more then Roller Derby is music. It makes sense being a Derby Diva that I need constant stimulation. Music helps I won’t kid you. In a perfect world you would think that the marriage of high octane music and Roller Derby Lyrics would be a great match. I am not so certain I agree. Roller Derby Girl by the 900lb Gorillas just really is not my cup of tea. I find far more inspiration from Pink’s So What. My thought is the music should get you revved up and make out want to get out there and skate. Jim Croce nostalgia aside there’s nothing like a good fight song to not only get you in the mood but to also get your spectators pumped. There is a difference However, to songs that are just high octane and songs that are aggressive and reflect the Roller Derby Culture. Although I might like Rock not every Roller Derby Diva does, some of you maybe a bit more country.

The Roller Derby Diva’s want to know what Roller Derby Music you love. Not all bad girls can make the ranks of the Roller Derby, even the movie version. The Derby Diva’s would like to give a high five to Shannon Tweed for giving it her best shot. Or should we just call her by her Roller Derby Nickname Shannon Bleed? In all, seriousness I think her name in the script was meant to be Thunder wheels. I have never been an actress so I really can’t comment on what it is like to get ready for an audition for a part in a movie. I can tell you that Shannon Tweed had her work cut out for her as she auditioned for a part in Drew Barrymore’s Whip It. Hardly the erotic that Shannon is known for, but in some strange way I could see where she could have been a good choice. You would have to have attitude to live with Gene Simmons.

Seriously though a broken arm could have potentially been written in the script. I can’t help but think part of the problem s that Shannon Tweed just didn’t quite encompass the Roller Derby Stereotype. You can be pretty and you can have attitude, but there is level of brash boldness that seems to only work in a chosen few. What do you think? After a day of skating this Roller Derby Diva just is not ready to quit. A perfect solution is to read all about what else is happening in the world of Roller Derby. With no shortage of great Roller Derby websites or Roller Derby Magazines there is always something to read about. I like Roller Derby Magazine like Blood and Thunder because they have some great articles and lots of information on Roller Derby Camps. That’s just an appetizer to get me in the mood for my other Roller Derby Magazines like Fracture. If your short on cash and just want to read a few Roller Derby Articles online, there are some great opinion pieces and historical Roller Derby Archives that can easily be found by clicking around.

Sometimes I just feel like I would love to discuss some of the articles that I have read. Since my family gets sick of me going on and on about Roller Derby I have to check out my friends on Derby Diva’s Twitter For instance did you read the online Swindle article on the Roller Derby? Talk about attitude, but in all fairness at least the article did justice to the hard working gals that help to make the Roller Derby Phenomenon what it is today. It is pretty inspirational to find out just what degree of efforts some of the smaller team go to in order to recruit good talent and get the funding needed to continue. I disagree with you mom, this is hardly a phase that will just pass and I am not he only one that is in love with the Roller Derby.
