Using roller skate shoes has its own health benefits as they prove to be a very useful form of cardio exercise and beneficial in arthritis problem.  Just like buying a pair of shoes, a few things should be considered, like the size of the shoes.  It must fit!  Make sure that the feet do not get cramped up otherwise it will be difficult to skate, and you are most likely to get blisters and some feet!

The inner sole should be soft and slightly cushioned so that when pressure is applied while skating, applying brakes or taking a turn, the toes should not be under undue pressure and cause added stress to the toenails. Added care in the fitting of the shoes, keep the feet strong and healthy to skate in the future. If there are ankle straps, roller skates should be strapped to the ankle properly. Looking for Inline Skates? Some Things to Consider

Posted by admin on August 28, 2009

Anytime is the perfect time to put on those skates and groove to your favorite tunes! If you already have a pair of inline skates just brush them off and get going!  But if you do not have skates,  you definitely need to get them.

Before you proceed, it is important to know that there are various types of inline skates, like inline hockey skates, roller skates, fitness skates, specialty skates, aggressive skates, and recreational skates. The best option if you are just starting, are the recreational skates.  They are easily managed and durable.

In purchasing the basic skate, the most important thing to be considered is the comfort and support that the skates will offer. After all, it is only if you are comfortable that, you will enjoy this exciting and thrilling sport. Take time when purchasing the skates.  Some stores suggest that the best time to buy skates is after a physical activity or after a busy day of work.  You will be able to determine if they give you the needed comfort, in terms of weight and size. The size should neither be too loose nor too tight because the feet tend to swell after skating.  There should be enough room to expand but not too loose that you might trip or have difficulty to balance yourself. Your feet must be snug in the skates without casuing any cramps and foot sores.

Once you fidn the right fit, the next important thing is the support and the type of support. Initially the only support offered was laces, and then it was buckles, then straps and Velcro.. One must carefully see which type of support system is suitable to him in terms of time, ease, fit and at the same time give the luxury of easily adjusting the straps either loose or tight while skating.

In purchasing skates, you will need to also look at brand and the cost. This will depend on your skating goal, which means whether you aim to pursue a career in skating, or as a fitness source or for pure recreation. The price will vary not only with the styling, the comfort, the weight, the support, but also the brand,.  You will pay for the name but you alos buy the reputation of the brand.  Choose wisely.

Try on different types of skates, check which one gives you that feeling of comfort and support.  Consideer the brand and the price.  You can get alot of assistance in many of the sporting equipment stores in your local area.

Roller Derby Roller Skates

Posted by RollerDiva on August 15, 2010

Are all Roller skates Roller Derby skates? Well there are some that look like they are Roller Derby Skates, but in the opinion of Derby Diva’s not all skates are created equal. Although your aunt’s skates out in the garage may seem like a good pair to use, I have to tell you don’t do that. It might be fine for someone that just wants to skate around for a few hours once in awhile, however it really is not the best thing if you want to do any serious Roller Derby Training. Roller Derby Skating is serious physical work. You have to make sure the Roller Derby Skates you choose are in good condition and free from any defects.

What you should look for is a higher end skate. Roller Derby Skates vary in price, some of the better skates can cost a few hundred dollars. Take your time to look around and you should be able to find a good deal on a good grade skate. There are advantages of using new skates, make sure you have regular maintenance to keep them in peak performing condition. If you skate a lot every six months should be the minimum between a serious tuneup. The bearings will last longer and be smooth and the wheels will not be pitted. Choose a skate that does not pinch or rub, you should feel comfortable with your foot stable. What color or design you choose is all up to you. Remember Roller Derby Skates are actually sports equipment. Don’t penny pinch, your skates can be what helps you make points!

Roller Derby Quad Skates

Posted by RollerDiva on August 15, 2010

A lot of you probably were not born in the days of Quad skates. There was a time when someone said they were going roller skating that was the type of skate everyone would wear. Seems like inline skates have been around for ever doesn’t it? Quad skated mean there are four wheels and they are not in a row like inline skates. Well it does not take a Roller Derby Diva to tell you that you can do it just as good on four wheels as inline skating. In fact and I maybe prejudiced, I think you can actually do it better. If you are planning to compete the WFTDA rules state that players are to wear quad skates. Refs can wear either style but I don’t understand who would prefer inline.

Quad skates are out there to buy, they can cost on the cheaper end as little as $59US or for better skates up to a few hundred dollars. You want to make sure you make a wise investment if you are planning to compete, make sure you get a pair that will stand up to the wear and tear you will put on the skates, but still look real nice with your skirts. Take care of your skates by getting the bearings changed, this will extend your wheel life and help you experience a smoother ride. Other tips are to keep your laces as new and intact as possible and clean the boot I know the blood spots are cool but eventually they will draw flies.

Roller Derby 5 wheel inline skates

Posted by RollerDiva on August 10, 2010

As the Roller Derby Divas grow, the Canadian scene in Toronto, Ontario and Winnepeg are taking more and more notice of what transformations are taking place… Should the sport accept changes to the class of roller skate? What do you think, are the traditional  8 wheeler girls set to be transformed into 10 inline wheel girls? Do let us know!

There are many roller derby documentaries with brutal and sexy girls from all over the world, and also from the new generation of girls coming up from the UK – check out the Glasgow Girls.

For me, it has to be traditional skates, for they are part of the whole image of the sport, and hey, have you ever tried a sharp angle stop on inline skates? Forget it! And even the sound on the track, you know that beautiful rumble that gathers at roller derby events around the world… It has to be eight wheels, all day every day! And I’m a wondering where the idea of changing a fundamental of the sport came from, probably not from one of us girls, more likely from an aggressive manufacturer somewheres… Get outta here!

The whole history and image of the sport has been built up, from the track up, and the first stop on the way… Those 8 beeyootiful wheels!

Quad skates forever!

The ABC’s of a Roller Skate – The Parts of the Roller Skate

Posted by admin on December 14, 2009

A roller skate may look very small and compact but then we all know good things come in small packages.   So what makes up this small neat package?    Let’s take a quick look as we open one fold at a time.   Like a human body or any machinery even a roller skate, has many small and intricate parts that differ like personalities with the type and brand.

Some basic parts of any roller skate are:

  • Roller Skate Wheels
  • Roller Skate Bearings
  • Roller Skate Plates
  • Roller Skate Bushings
  • Roller Skate Toe Plugs& Stops
  • Roller Skate Trucks
  • Back Brakes
  • Boots

The wheels are in accordance with the bearing structure, wheels could be plastic, fiber, the normal hard maple types. Proper bearings and greasing enable a smooth movement of the wheels.   Each wheel has two bearings that are spaced by a thin plastic or metal due to which there is minimal brushing and wearing of the bearings.   Remember harder the wheels more the speed of the skates and better the pick up.

The wheels are aligned on a strip called as the skate truck; this strip is made of light aluminum or plastic and keeps the wheels firmly placed, unless and until the wheels are a detachable variety.   The truck is in turn attested to a molded plastic boot that holds the support attachments, like the buckles, straps or Velcro.   As the boots act like a covering, these boot shells could either be made of plastic, leather or a fusion of these two materials.

In order to lend a good support to the ankle joints, the boots are designed in such a way that the lower and upper portion are connected to the ankle from all sides by a precise hinge system, allowing enough space for the ankle movement.   For better comfort the shells or boots as commonly known are lined with a sweat absorbing material compressed with a thin sheet of cotton or nylon foam.

A firm and hard rubber brake is attached to the heel of the frame of the roller skates allowing the skater to control the speed and stop as and when required by simply moving his foot.   In short as in any other vehicle or mode of transport a brake is a must feature similarly is the case with the roller skates too.   Nevertheless a heal brake could hamper the skater especially if he is a fast pace skater or player in a crossover turn, so in such cases they do not prefer a heel brake and a different technique and device called as a Toe Stop is put to use.
