About Roller Skate Shoes

Posted by admin on September 13, 2009

Feeling tired to walk across the street to get the grocery?  Roller skating to the grocery store?  Anyone?

In short, it can be a good form of exercise and no one can give any lame reason for not doing it. Using roller skate shoes has its own health benefits as they prove to be a very useful form of cardio exercise and beneficial in arthritis problem.  Just like buying a pair of shoes, a few things should be considered, like the size of the shoes.  It must fit!  Make sure that the feet do not get cramped up otherwise it will be difficult to skate, and you are most likely to get blisters and some feet!

The inner sole should be soft and slightly cushioned so that when pressure is applied while skating, applying brakes or taking a turn, the toes should not be under undue pressure and cause added stress to the toenails. Added care in the fitting of the shoes, keep the feet strong and healthy to skate in the future. If there are ankle straps, roller skates should be strapped to the ankle properly. Roller skate shoe can either have two wheels, four wheels, fixed wheels, or detachable wheels.  It is completely your choice which you choose to start with.

The shoes also need to be tough and strong to be able to do roller skating and bear all the added stress which might occur while skating. You get a lot of colorful variety in shoes, designer shoes, and special shoes for kids, women, and men.

Roller Derby Strategy

Posted by RollerDiva on August 16, 2010

To win any sort of competition you have to have a strategy. That’s how generals win wars, and how other sports team manage to stay on top. Even if all your Roller Derby Team members play at 100% by devising a strategy you can outwit the opposing team and take the point lead. This can be very effective at those times when you have injuries or for whatever reason are not up to the usual steam your team brings. It doesn‘t mean our Roller Derby Team isn‘t good, a strategy just makes your Roller Derby Team smart. Roller Derby Diva’s are not here to share all their secrets, but we can talk about some of the more common Roller Derby Strategies that can make a difference.

One method that can work is called passing the star, that happens when a jammer passes her position to the pivot. This can be great if you have a pivot that is a fast skater, or an unexpected choice. Sometimes top jammers just get worn out, or might have an injure and can’t perform up to the usual standard. It might not seem like it when you are watching but two minutes can feel like an eternity when you are out for points. Last thing you want to do is have a player push the limits and end out for the rest of the season. There are probably plenty of other Roller Derby Tips that could work as a great strategy. Maybe you can drop me a tweet at the Derby Diva’s and share some of the best Roller Derby Strategies that you have come up with.

Roller Derby Roster

Posted by RollerDiva on August 15, 2010

One day when I was clicking around the internet I came a crossed a sight that had a great idea. This website was trying to build an International Roller Derby Roster. The idea was an expansion from the original one that was made by Paige Burner some time ago. The more I thought about it I could see the genius in the idea. It was a concept that reminded me of a world wide Roller Derby Phonebook. How convenient it would be to find any place you go. From a Roller Derby Team standpoint this would be a great way to find potential new members, or even Roller Derby Teams to skate against. Roller Derby Leagues could use this information to form Roller Derby Tournaments all over the world. Now that would definitely be something to see. I think it is definitely something we might see in the future. The Roller derby isn’t just on TV anymore.

The Roller Derby Roster is actually just a listing of Roller Derby Nicknames, the skaters number, and team. There is no other identifying information available to the viewer. I found some of the Roller Derby Nicknames pure genius, in fact I was jealous I didn’t think of some of them. As of August 2010 there are close to 21000 names of skaters posted. Next time someone asks you how popular Roller Derby is, point them in the direction of the roster and let them find out for themselves. Who would have thought there were so many Roller Derby Gals dedicated to the sport? You can find more at The Derby Diva’s on Twitter.

Roller Derby Outfit Ideas

Posted by RollerDiva on August 15, 2010

Long before the trend of skateboarding gear there was another fashion statement made by the gals in the Roller Derby. Roller Derby Outfits were as loud and interesting as the personalities that wore them. In many ways the Roller Derby Fashions that the teams adopted became a very important aspect of modern pop culture. Today you can find just about any piece of Roller Derby Gear that you would like with just a few keystrokes. Whether you are a Roller Derby Skater yourself or just interested in making a Roller Derby Costume drawn from the idea of the Roller Derby Zombie movies, there are plenty of styles to chose from.

If you are thinking of some sort of Roller Derby Team uniform there is a lot to consider. For example would you like all your Roller Derby Uniforms to be exactly the same? That’s perfectly fine just make sure that it reflects what your Roller Derby Teams persona is all about. There are plenty of fine firms that produce identical Roller Derby Team wear based on your specifications. Amateur Roller Derby Teams may have more latitude and opt for a look that varies yet encompasses the team colors. If you have no idea what you want to do at all why not take a peek at what other teams are doing by visiting The Derby Diva’s Facebook I am sure you will not only be inspired but also have plenty of other like minded people to bounce ideas off of. Before you know it you will be Twittering with the rest of the Derby Diva’s about how cool your gear is compared to theirs.

Roller Derby Leagues

Posted by RollerDiva on August 15, 2010

As the popularity of the Roller Derby Endurance marathons grew, Leo Seltzer made the decision to change the sport somewhat. It was discovered that the crowds loved to cheer on their favorite teams. In fact that was a big part of the fascination that kept the observers coming back for more. Roller Derby Teams soon expanded to become Roller Derby Leagues. In fact in the 1960’s there was quite a bit of league growth much to the delight of the increasing fan base. To bad the original business model for the Roller Derby did not have the same degree of Roller Derby Endurance that the actual sport and fans have.

Roller Derby is an international sports with hundreds of amateur leagues including junior divisions in several countries. There are professional teams that play the sport, but the numbers and popularity of the professional circuit has dwindled since the Roller Derby of the 1980-1990’s. I have heard from my friends at The Derby Diva’s that there is quite a few young women interested in the Roller Derby. In fact the Derby Diva’s Twitter seems to have non-stop action that is almost, but not quite, as high octane as the gals on skates.

Although Roller Derby was though of as sports entertainment, the truth is that the teams and players of today have a high degree of dedication and do benefit from the Roller Derby Fitness they need to play the game. Tutu’s maybe optional, but the lore and the attitude of the Roller Derby Style will continue to be a big part of what the sport is all about.

Roller Derby Jammer Drills

Posted by RollerDiva on August 10, 2010

Like most sports, the real integrity and power of the team arise not from individual talent, but collective team effort – There is not a team in the world that does not know this. And Derby Divas? Well we work hard at team building, practice, and those all important Jammer drills.

The first pass through the pack, well this is what determines the lead jammer, and for this no points are scored, but as part of an overall strategy this drill should be practiced again and again, as with this prime action initiated, the entire game might be won.

The Roller Derby Divas spend hour after hour on their skates, those eight wheels of heaven, on that track of heaven, rehearsing the drills that have won them so many games of last season, and will help them ride to the top of the leagues in next year’s season.

The jammers can then start to take their very first journey through the pack that is racing ahead, eager, looking and tense… the tension is building girls – feel it! And the first to take the lead jammer slot, and can call of the jam at any time – Practice those drills girls!

The lead jammer can call off the jam at any time, this is one advantage of taking that lead jam space.

Roller Derby Jammer

Posted by RollerDiva on August 10, 2010

Bob Marley… He’d be a jammer if he was on our team here with the Roller Derby Divas – You’d have him too wouldn’t you girls? And you jammers, you are girls who start at the back of the pack, and your job is to score points by taking the lead from the entire pack.

What might the Master Blaster’s technique be, his method of overcoming the pack, it might be Ja Rasatfari! But here at Derby Divas, we use speed, power and control, riding through from the back, following through the clear path laid ahead of us, scoring points by passing the opposing team members, calling off the jam if you wish, and yes, that pint that makes it all so visible to the rest of the world, that star on the side of our crash helmet, well make that 2 stars, one on either side of the helmet cover – actually!

The whistle blows and the first jam begins – we go! The pack starts to rumble down the track, and the heat of the jam rises to the surface – Hot and Bubbling girls! The double whistle blow means that the back of the pack has reached the start line and this signals the jammers to hit it! It is on, and the game is as hot as a live wire… From Japan to Canada the jam is on.

To see what is happening moment by moment, follow us on Twitter here at Derby Divas and come along and like us on Facebook Roller Derby Divas… you know you want to.

Roller Derby Game

Posted by RollerDiva on August 10, 2010

There is a game that we love to play, us Roller Derby Divas, and we would love to play it with you. All over Canada we are connecting and meeting with fellow enthusiasts, happy to connect and join in with Roller Derby.

And with most games there are penalties to be paid, the price we pay if we break the rules. And of course, every game is different, from the minute we start to the minute we finish there are different scoring rates, levels of aggression and talent, and these will be variable, so that even on the most expected of results you may find the favourites ending the game as losers.

One variety of the game has no penalties or referees, but it may not be the case that this off shoot of the sport survives… What do you think about the Renegade Rollergirls? We want to know here what you reckon, so do contact us here at Derby Dives and give us your views, ideas and opinions, we need to know!

The Womens Flat Track Derby Association is the body that organises the game for girls who travel as teams and play the game in an inter league, they have their rules and rankings, and their rules are adopted by other non affiliated teams.

So as the game is evolving and developing we can see that the time for an overall governing body has arrived, for in the end, as in boxing, it will be difficult for the various rules and governing bodies to integrate their rules and find the one world champions… But maybe this will happen sooner than we expect – what do you think?

To see what is happening moment by moment, follow us on Twitter here at Derby Divas and come along and like us on Facebook Roller Derby Divas… you know you want to.
