Roller Derby Terminology

Posted by RollerDiva on August 16, 2010

Earlier we had some fun with some of the Roller Derby Lingo, but in all seriousness there is some Roller Derby Terminology that is important to know. It does not take long before you know what a Roller Derby Jammer is, and a Roller Derby Blocker is just common sense. But do you know what it means to be cutting the track? Before you go off to get an axe listen up a moment to The Derby Diva’s you really can nt take all Roller Derby Lingo as a literal meaning. We promise you, if you take the time to listen or ask you might get a kick out of what the Roller Derby girls are really talking about.

If your cutting the track you are rejoining the pack by crossing the field after a fall. See when you know what it means it isn’t as scary as it sounds. The pack is your defensive skaters, it consists of your lead pivot and three blockers. Some of the gals may act like wolves, maybe that’s why they are called a pack. But if you hear the the call to pack’em up don’t unlace your skates just yet. To pack’em up is an indication to start the fight before the jam. You remember jam right? that stuff that was on your toast. Derby Diva’s like to tease! But hey why not stop by for a visit to our Face book page. Who knows maybe we can get together and pull a chola some night. I’ll tell you what that means after a few drinks.

  1. Machida Said,

Knowing such terminology would really help if you are going to skate with some of the professionals since you would know what they are talking about. It would be ashamed to ask a girl out if you can’t even understand what they are talking about.

  2. Orrymain Said,

That was a great post and I hope to discover more like that. A term a day helps the new or returning fan back into the fold. I truly believe it’s a nice idea to provide definitions like this. It does help.

  3. Tejus Jones Said,

Well may be my coach aint good enough with terminologies. I happen to have buzzed him about cutting the track. He doesn’t seem to be having a clue! May be he is still an amatuer trying to coach??

  4. leighdu Said,

OK, I am really curious what “chola” means now. I’ve heard the other terms, but that one is a new. Whatever it means, I think I may want to pull a chola or two myself.

  5. ausqtie Said,

Roller derby has a bit of its own language. Reading this section will make the derby events better. I don’t know how many times I’m asking people around me what are they talking about. Leighdu, I have heard “chola” and still am curious of the meaning myself.

  6. Crazy Lady Said,

Lingo is so cool. It is what makes a sport unique, and who doesn’t have a little fun speaking this special ‘foreign’ language, even when we know it might frustrate some? It’s all in good fun.
